A Three-Wheeler For Grown-Ups?

November 29th, 2006 · 4 Comments

My sister showed me this a while back and I so want one! Actually, I want one for me and my husband to share (maybe), and one each for the two oldest kids. ) It’s a strange looking vehicle, but I think it will become common-place within ten years.

The Trikke (pronounced trike) is a three-wheeled human powered machine that allows

a rider to propel a chainless, pedal-less device forward without ever touching foot to ground. This elegantly simple construct provides a stable 3-point platform that leans into the turn with the rider while all three wheels remain in contact with the ground.

It reminds me of the fun we had as kids, accessible to (and easy for) adults (even us out-of-shape adults). It also looks like a great way to get in exercise without even noticing (well, not during play, anyway lol ).

Are you a homeschooler? Then you can use it as an excuse to teach your child some physics:

Trikke cambering vehicles allow a rider to utilize a fundamental physics principle known as the Conservation of Angular Momentum. While traveling on a slalom-like path, a rider moves his center of gravity (his mass) from left to right (for example) while leaning the vehicle into a right turn; this movement of the rider’s mass is towards the center of the turn, thus decreasing the radius of an imaginary circle which is formed around the center point of the rider’s turn.

Not that you need to know physics to make it work. P

In decent weather, I can see my husband riding this to work! We get snow here in Colorado, but not enough for him to use the Skki to get to work when the weather’s not good enough for the Trikke. )

Because you’ve really got to see the Trikke in action to understand it, go to their site and watch their promo video. I put this part last, ‘cuz I know you’ll be entranced by this amazing vehicle - made small enough for your 4 year old, your teen will be using it for extreme sports, and mom and dad will love it as a fun way to get some exercise.[tags]trikke, exercise, three-wheeler, trike, sport, fitness, extreme sports[/tags]

When vacationing in Michigan, we saw the Trikke in use on the shorefront. As less coordinated people, we were riding our two-wheel kick scooter Xootr and GoPed.

The bearings on the Xootr make for great gliding and the GoPed’s great tires offer different advantages. We really love the two-wheelers, and they offer great cardio workouts as well.

    Adrienne,
    Got links? D

    How did I forget links?

Xootr Cruz(my favorite- the sports car of adult kick-scooters):

Consider the pin upgrade and the carrying strap. They’re both well-designed

Jim’s favorite is the KnowPed (fenders for rainy days and tougher wheels best suit his use):

Thanks, Adrienne. I’ll have to check them out! Maybe one day I can get you and Jim to write about your experiences with these vehicles for GFG. )
